History

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre stands in the Christian Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City. By tradition it contains the site of the Crucifixion and the empty tomb of Jesus. Its first church and rotunda date from the time of Constantine the Great, and al-Hakim destroyed them in 1009. Several Christian communities share the church, including the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
