History
The first church at Tabgha was erected around 350 AD and was mentioned by Egeria in 380. It was enlarged around 480 with floor mosaics, and the Persians destroyed it in 614. In 1888 the German Catholic Society for Palestine acquired the site, and full excavations began in 1932. Since 1939 the Benedictines have administered it; the present church, inaugurated in 1984, follows the floor plan of the 5th-century Byzantine church.
